  1. INTERCEPT P-38S AND P-47S 
  2.  
  3. On January 31, 1944, the 38th Squadron of 
  4. the 55th Fighter Group was providing top 
  5. cover to P-47 Thunderbolts on a dive 
  6. bombing mission.  As they approached the 
  7. target area, the P-38s were bounced from 
  8. above by fifteen to twenty Bf 109s.  The 
  9. Lightning pilots countered the attack by 
  10. turning into the interceptors and climbing, 
  11. but the 109s zoomed back up to altitude.  
  12. Capt. Joseph Myers and his flight climbed 
  13. to 33,000 feet, but were unable to get 
  14. above the Germans.  When the P-38s 
  15. began their descent to rejoin their 
  16. squadron, the Bf 109s attacked again.  In 
  17. the ensuing dogfights, the Americans 
  18. downed at least two of the Luftwaffe 
  19. fighters.

  23. Lead your flight of four Bf 109G-6s in a 
  24. diving attack on the P-47 fighter/bombers 
  25. and their P-38 escorts below.  Your first 
  26. priority is to stop the P-47s before they 
  27. reach Venlo Luftwaffe airfield to drop 
  28. their bombs and strafe the aircraft parked 
  29. there.  But you'll also have to deal with 
  30. their P-38 escorts, so watch your tail and 
  31. protect your friends, as well.
